This course aims to deliver the basic knowledge necessary for understanding ultrashort light pulse generation mechanisms, their propagation in linear and nonlinear optical media and their characterization techniques. The course will introduce the main ultrafast spectroscopy techniques and provide examples of their application to the study of dynamical processes in physics, chemistry and biology.

By the end of the course, the student will acquire a basic understanding of the properties of ultrashort light pulses, their generation and characterization techniques and the most important time-domain optical spectroscopy techniques. The acquired knowledge will enable the student to work in advanced research laboratories as well as in high tech companies developing ultrafast laser sources for applications in micromachining, telecommunications or biomedicine.
