Video lectures and tutorials have made their way into university education and are routinely provided in many courses. But recent research indicates that videos may entice students to a shallow processing of the content to be learned. Based on an outline of the "desirable difficulties" approach, the talk will discuss usage patterns of video lectures and ask how students may be encouraged to develop self-regulated and elaborative strategies for video-based learning.
