Starch Fiction

Science and Nature Festival: 22.May - 30. May

We will show you how to prepare at home a glowing non-Newtonian fluid. All you need are potatoes and tonic water. What is a non-Newtonian fluid? It is a fluid that behaves differently than classical fluids because its viscosity changes under force. For example, it is more solid when shaken and more liquid when left unshaken. To have more fun, we will make it glow by using tonic water, which contains molecules of quinine. These molecules can be used to treat malaria but also emit light when irradiated with “black” light. Watch this video to learn more and do this experiment yourself or with the help of your parents at home.

Have fun!
