Previous research showed that Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) enables simulations of 3D objects for educational purposes. In contrast, it is yet unclear whether the technology is also suitable for collaborative learning between remote group members. In a recent study, we set out to compare IVR, video conferencing and face-to-face interaction in a challenging group decision task. Testing 174 participants, we found no difference between IVR, video conferencing and face-to-face groups with regard to discussion intensity. Interestingly, however, IVR groups showed a higher probability of solving the task correctly after controlling for the effects of social presence and cognitive load. In this webinar, I will discuss the specific advantages and drawbacks of multi-user IVR compared to other forms of communication. Furthermore, I will outline possible directions for future applications in the area of (distance) education.
