AI in virtual global lecture halls

Virtual worlds are not only used for entertainment, they may also enrich learning environments. In the ShanghAI Lectures, we have been experimenting with virtual worlds that enable students from all around the globe to work together on exercises and to directly interact with the lecturers.

The ShanghAI Lectures project is an annual lecture series on embodied natural and artificial intelligence, held via video conference and complemented by group exercises, that has the goal of exploring modern methods of knowledge transfer and bringing together students and researchers from various cultural and research backgrounds.

In this webinar we will learn more about the ShanghAI Lectures in general and then look at Open Wonderland, the open-source framework we used for our virtual worlds. After a short “history” of our first steps with early versions of Wonderland, we will present many examples of how we used this framework and discuss its strengths and weaknesses.
